2010 Panama Jazz Festival Educational Activities
Founded by Panamanian pianist, Danilo Perez, the 7th annual Panama Jazz Festival will be held in January 2010 and will be dedicated to Panamanian pianist, Sonny White. The principal emphasis of the festival is music education, and because of this, all invited artists must teach master classes in the famous “Music Clinics”, where students from all parts of Latin America come together to learn from the international masters of jazz. Among the international artists that have participated are Wayne Shorter, Chucho Valdez, Jack De Johnette, John Patituci, Joe Lovano, Randy Weston, Brian Blade, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Neena Freelon, Kanny Barron, Marco Pignataro, Eddie Gomez, Regina Carter, Steve Turre, Stanley Jordan, Janis Siegel, David Sanchez, Charlie Hunter, Tia Fuller, and many more.
Each year, the festival invites prestigious institutions to come and give group and private classes during the week of the festival. For the 2010 festival, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, and the Golandsky Institute at Princeton University have all confirmed their participation. These institutions will also be holding auditions for admission and scholarships to their different academic programs.
In 2010, the Panama Jazz Festival would like to extend the invitation to all interested students from Panama and Latin America to participate in the classical music auditions being held by the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and the Golandsky Institute. The requirements and dates for the auditions will be published on the festival’s website, www.panamajazzfestival.com.
The 2010 festival will take place January 11-16, 2010, in Panama City, Panama. The festival will celebrate the opening of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, located in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The institute will be led by pianist, Danilo Perez, and his work will focus on the use of music as a tool for social change, ecological restoration, the relationship between nature and the creative process, and the study of music from an interdisciplinary perspective. During the festival, the students and professors of the institute will be teaching private and group classes.
The music clinics will take place January 11-15, 2010, in the Centro de Capacitaciones de Ascanio Arosemena of the Panama Canal Authority, located in the Balboa-Ancon neighborhood of Panama City.
Every festival, Berklee College of Music’s Department of Production and Sound Engineering sends four representatives to teach sound engineering, music production and technology classes. This program combines theory and practice in an academic and professional setting of the highest caliber. Themes covered in the classes include studio recording, mixing, technical support, record production for Big Bands, among others.
The Panama Jazz Festival also offers master classes on Panamanian Folklore music (taught by Maestro of the Panamanian Tambor, Ricaurte Villareal), dance (with members of the Panamanian National Ballet), classical music (with renowned national and international musicians), a literature program and a children’s program (a summer music program for children aged 4-16 years).
